Located in the heart of Leelanau County, Palmer Woods Forest Reserve boasts over 1,000 acres, making it the largest of all Leelanau Conservancy’s trails in the region. The property is located just off Wheeler Road in Maple City, Michigan, a 30-minute drive west of Traverse City. Palmer offers year-round recreation for all trail users, including:

  • Hiking
  • Snowshoeing
  • Mountain biking
  • XC-skiing


Palmer Woods Mountain Bike Trails

Palmer has 17 miles of mountain bike trails that combine The Enlightener, Acer Ridge, and a few connector trails. With several intermediate features, including jumps and drops, riders have many ways to experience the trails and keep every trip to Palmer fresh! 


Palmer Woods Hiking Trails

Palmer Woods’ hiking and cross-country skiing trails total more than 10 miles, with more trails in the works! Choose from various distances, including the Price Valley Trail and marquee Darwin Loop Trail.

Who Manages Palmer Woods?

Palmer Woods is managed by Leelanau Conservancy. The property includes two dedicated deer enclosures, supports forest restorations, and used to monitor forest health in the area. It's also a crucial part of the Glen Lake watershed. The forest is located just a mile from Glen Lake and plays a vital role in maintaining excellent water quality. 
Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association supports Leelanau Conservancy with trail maintenance as a part of our Leelanau trail commitments. We're proud to play a role in expanding trail access across Northern Michigan and promoting non-motorized trail opportunities in Leelanau County.
